Japan is fighting a big forest fire in the city of Ōfunato, which started on February 26, 2025. The fire has already burned 2,100 hectares (5,190 acres) of land, destroying 84 homes and forcing over 4,500 people from 1,896 families to leave their houses.
Many have moved to emergency shelters, while others are staying with friends and family. The fire has caused fear and sadness among the people, and the government is doing everything possible to stop it.
The fire is spreading fast because of strong winds and Japan's driest winter since 1946, making it difficult to control. More than 2,000 firefighters and Self-Defense Forces personnel are working to put out the flames.
16 helicopters are flying over the fire, dropping water to stop it from spreading. Sadly, one person has died, and officials are checking if it was because of the fire. People are being told to stay alert and follow safety instructions as the fire is still dangerous.
There is hope that rain will come soon, which could help put out the fire. Until then, firefighters and rescue teams are working hard to protect people. The people of Japan are standing strong together, hoping this disaster will end soon.
