Tia Zakher, a 22‑year‑old TikTok creator, sparked a viral wave with her extreme “caveman” skincare trend. Since March, she's avoided all facial cleansing—including no water—aiming to reset her skin barrier after years of over‑exfoliation and acne. Her face developed thick, flaky texture due to “retention hyperkeratosis,” where dead skin doesn’t shed properly.
Dermatologists firmly advise against this route. Experts warn that foregoing even gentle cleansing can clog pores, trigger acne, and invite infections, especially with daily exposure to sweat, pollution, and makeup. NHS dermatologist Dr. Clare Kiely described Zakher’s condition as dermatitis neglecta, marked by waxy, dirt-trapped skin build-up.
Dermatologists unanimously advocate a minimalist yet hygienic skincare approach: a gentle cleanser (or just water), moisturizing, and broad-spectrum SPF. They emphasize that resetting your skin doesn't mean abandoning skin care, but rather simplifying it—using barrier-supporting ingredients like ceramides while maintaining basic hygiene.
While some report short-term relief from ditching harsh products, most professionals caution that long-term avoidance of cleansing poses more risks than benefits. Ultimately, experts recommend tailored, gentle routines over extreme trends—and always stress sunscreen's non-negotiable importance.
