Mispronouncing luxury fashion brand names is a common, yet easily avoidable, style faux pas. While flaunting designer wear may be effortless, saying the names right can leave even fashion enthusiasts tongue-tied. A growing wave of social media creators and stylists are now urging people to polish their pronunciation before flaunting their Prada.
Take Spanish luxury house Loewe, for instance. Often butchered as “Low-eev” or “Lo-vee,” the correct pronunciation is “lo-WEH-vay,” honouring its Spanish roots. Similarly, the iconic French brand Hermès is not “Her-mees,” but the more refined “Er-MEZ,” with a soft, silent 'H'.
Another frequent offender is Givenchy. The sleek Parisian label rolls off the tongue as “Zhee-von-shee,” not “Give-en-chee.” Even fashion’s favourite red soles brand, Christian Louboutin, trips many up. The correct way? “Loo-boo-tan,” with the emphasis on the last syllable.
Lanvin is “Lahn-VAHN,” Yves Saint Laurent becomes “Eve San Lau-RON,” and Italian powerhouse Versace should be said as “Ver-SAH-cheh,” with that signature Mediterranean flair.
Stylists argue that correct pronunciation reflects not just fashion awareness but cultural respect. With designer labels often rooted in European languages, a little linguistic finesse can go a long way—because in fashion, confidence begins with how you say it.
