In a major anti-encroachment operation, around 200 shops and stalls were removed from Delhi's bustling Sarojini Nagar market late Saturday night.
The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and Delhi Police initiated the drive at around 11 pm on May 17, aiming to reclaim public spaces from unauthorised encroachments. The operation continued until 1 am, sparking backlash from traders.
Ashok Randhawa, President of the Sarojini Nagar Mini Traders Association, stated that even parts of authorised shops were damaged during the demolition. Vendors were seen carrying their tables and belongings, while videos posted by police officials showed heavy deployment and market clearance activity.
Delhi Police claimed the drive focused on clearing obstructions to improve pedestrian movement and public convenience. However, traders questioned the legality of the operation and alleged that it lacked proper documentation or prior notice. The incident has stirred concerns among local shopkeepers over future demolitions and losses.
