Anna Wintour, the iconic editor-in-chief of Vogue, has announced her retirement from the top editorial role after an unprecedented 37‑year tenure. At 75, she will transition to global editorial director of Vogue and global chief content officer at Condé Nast, while a new "head of editorial content" assumes day-to-day leadership.
Wintour joined Vogue in 1988, revitalizing the publication by blending high fashion with mass culture—most famously featuring stone‑washed jeans on the November 1988 cover. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, she shaped industry trends, elevated celebrity features, and championed emerging talent.
Her tenure expanded Vogue into a global powerhouse, strengthening its influence through initiatives like the Met Gala and spin‑off titles such as Teen Vogue and Men’s Vogue. Wintour also serves as chair of the Met Gala and has held executive roles across Condé Nast since 2013.
While recognized for her visionary leadership and trendsetting influence, her reign has also sparked criticism—ranging from being deemed “aloof and demanding” to navigating controversies around diversity and editorial direction.
By shifting roles, Wintour embraces a more strategic, mentorship-focused position, ensuring continuity and legacy while preparing Vogue for its next chapter. The industry now awaits the appointment of her successor at the editorial helm.
