Protecting your kidneys doesn’t require outlandish measures simple, evidence-supported lifestyle habits can make a significant difference. These include :
- Stay Well Hydrated: Adequate water intake helps your kidneys filter waste efficiently and reduces the risk of stones and infections.
- Manage Blood Pressure and Blood Sugar: Since hypertension and diabetes are leading contributors to kidney decline, keeping both under control ideally below 130/80 mmHg and HbA1c under 7% is critical. Lifestyle changes and medications like ACE inhibitors or ARBs can help.
- Avoid Overuse of Harmful Medications: Common pain-relievers like NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen, naproxen) can damage kidneys if used frequently.
- Eat Smart Prioritize Kidney-Friendly Foods: Emphasize whole, plant-based foods and limit sodium, processed foods, and excessive protein. A renal-style diet moderating protein, sodium, potassium, and phosphorus can ease kidney workload.
Early kidney damage often progresses silently. Watch for subtle signs like fatigue, swelling (especially around eyes or legs), foamy urine, or persistent itching tests like eGFR and urine albumin can help detect issues early.
