Anchored on Dal Lake, Srinagar’s floating post office has been delivering letters, parcels, and memories since 1953. Resting on a traditional wooden houseboat painted in India Post’s red and yellow, it blends function with the artistry of Kashmiri craftsmanship-carved walnut panels, papier-mâché decor, khatamband ceilings, and embroidered fabrics give the space the warmth of a living gallery.
Tourists and locals alike use it to send parcels-saffron, pashmina shawls, or postcards-making each mail item a keepsake from Kashmir. For many, posting a letter here is a quiet ritual, blending nostalgia with the serene rhythm of Dal Lake.
Despite modern technology, the post office remains a vital cultural link. Inside, staff like Abdul Hameed Tantray preserve the charm of handwritten letters while managing philately collections and daily mail.
More than a postal facility, it is a symbol of heritage, resilience, and connection. From floods to changing times, this houseboat continues to float, reminding visitors that some traditions endure not because they are fast, but because they carry stories that touch hearts across generations.
