If you’re packing snacks in your carry-on before your next flight, here’s a crucial update. The TSA (Transportation Security Administration) has clear rules: any item that can be smeared, spread, pumped, or poured is considered a liquid or gel-and must be under 3.4 ounces. Shockingly, everyday food items like peanut butter, hummus, yogurt, and soft cheeses are often confiscated at security checkpoints because they violate this limit.
Even travel-size packs can exceed the rule. Creamy dips, jams, and even salsa and honey also fall under this category. While solid snacks like chips, fruits, and dry sandwiches are allowed, these creamy foods must either be in very small containers or packed in your checked baggage.
TSA officials remind travelers that “if you can scoop it with a spoon, it’s probably not allowed in large amounts.” Exceptions apply for baby formula, breast milk, and medicines-with proper declaration. So before heading to the airport, double-check your snack bag—you could save time, money, and avoid unnecessary delays.
