This Pune restaurant evokes the rugged desert aesthetics of Dune

In the bustling cityscape of Pune, a new dining establishment named Mocha is captivating patrons with its distinctive design inspired by the desert landscapes of the science fiction universe, Dune. Crafted by the Chandigarh-based Loop Design Studio, led by architects Suvrita Bhardwaj and Nikhil Pratap Singh, Mocha offers an immersive experience that transports visitors to the fictional planet of Arrakis.

Situated on the 15th-floor terrace of the One Place commercial building in Wanowrie, Mocha spans an impressive 9,000 square feet. The venue is divided into two primary zones: an enclosed area featuring double-height glass walls punctuated by expansive skylights, and an open-to-sky terrace that provides panoramic views of Pune's skyline. This architectural layout not only maximizes natural light but also fosters a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces.

Upon entering Mocha, guests are greeted by minimalist lines and sculptural elements reminiscent of wind-sculpted sand dunes. Notably, cactus-shaped sculptures atop the pillars serve a dual purpose, concealing lighting fixtures that emit a subtle glow after sunset, enhancing the restaurant's ethereal ambiance. These sculptures are meticulously crafted from hollow mild steel pipes wrapped in flexible plywood, with textured surfaces achieved through a layered application of metal netting and a slurry of white putty and adhesive.

The interior design thoughtfully accommodates various dining preferences. A central community seating area features curved banquettes constructed from metal pipes clad in flexible plywood and finished with veneer, paired with oakwood chairs and Italian marble-topped tables. This arrangement fosters a communal dining experience while maintaining an atmosphere of understated elegance.

Loop Design Studio's commitment to materiality is evident throughout the space. The use of natural materials such as stone, wood, and bamboo, along with a palette of earthy tones, reinforces the desert-inspired theme. The design team's meticulous attention to detail ensures that each element contributes to the overall narrative, creating a cohesive and immersive environment.
