West Virginia has become the first U.S. state to enact a statewide ban on synthetic food dyes, targeting popular candies, cereals, and drinks known to contain harmful additives. The law, signed by Republican Gov. Patrick Morrisey, bans seven artificial dyes, including Red 3, Blue 1, and Yellow 5, from school meals starting August 2024, with a full statewide ban by 2028.
Lawmakers across 20+ states are pushing for similar bans, citing research linking these petroleum-based dyes to ADHD symptoms in children, behavioral issues, and potential cancer risks. While FDA recently banned Red 3, critics argue that brands like Kellogg's and major candy companies continue using artificial dyes in the U.S. despite switching to natural alternatives abroad.
While public health advocates call it a victory for consumer safety, the food industry warns of price hikes and fewer product choices. With states taking the lead, will Froot Loops and Skittles soon disappear from shelves?
