On March 4, 2025, President Donald Trump's administration enforced tariffs of 25% on imports from Canada and Mexico, and an additional 10% on Chinese goods, escalating global trade tensions.
In retaliation, Canada announced 25% tariffs on US goods valued at 30 billion Canadian dollars, effective immediately, with plans to extend these measures to an additional 125 billion Canadian dollars within three weeks. Outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau emphasized that these tariffs would remain until the US retracts its trade actions.
China responded by imposing additional tariffs ranging from 10% to 15% on various US agricultural products, including soybeans, corn, dairy, and beef. The Chinese finance ministry also implemented export and investment restrictions on 25 US firms, intensifying the trade dispute.
Mexico, anticipating the US tariffs, has prepared contingency plans, though specific details remain undisclosed. President Claudia Sheinbaum assured that Mexico is ready to respond appropriately to protect its economic interests.
These reciprocal measures have heightened concerns about a prolonged trade war, potentially disrupting global supply chains and economic stability.
