The Vatican has announced that Pope Francis's funeral will take place this Saturday at 8:00 am (GMT) at St. Peter's Basilica. Images released on Tuesday show the late pontiff lying in state at the Santa Marta residence, watched over by solemn Swiss Guards. Pope Francis, aged 88, died on Monday following a stroke and cardiac arrest. Despite recent health issues, including double pneumonia, he made a public appearance just weeks ago.
In a notable departure from papal tradition, Pope Francis wished to be buried in Rome's Basilica of Saint Mary Major, not St. Peter's, citing his lifelong devotion to the Virgin Mary. His will also requested a simple burial without lavish ornamentation.
World leaders including former US President Donald Trump and Argentina's Javier Milei are expected to attend. Cardinals are convening to discuss funeral logistics and initiate the ancient rituals ahead of the next papal conclave.
