The much-awaited New Pamban Bridge, connecting Rameswaram Island to the Tamil Nadu mainland, will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 6. Spanning 2.2 km, this vertical lift sea bridge is the first of its kind in India and promises to boost tourism and economic growth in the region. Trains crossing the bridge at a speed of 30 kmph will take around one minute and 45 seconds to traverse the structure.
Rameswaram, known for its rich spiritual and cultural heritage, offers a variety of experiences for visitors. One of the must-visit sites is the Ramanathaswamy Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, which is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and part of the Char Dham pilgrimage. The temple’s architectural grandeur, especially its intricately carved corridors and 22 holy wells, attracts devotees and tourists alike.
The New Pamban Bridge itself is an attraction, providing stunning views of the Bay of Bengal. Watching trains cross the bridge with the sea beneath is truly mesmerizing.
Another iconic spot is Dhanushkodi Beach, located at the southeastern tip of Rameswaram. Once a bustling town, it was destroyed in the 1964 cyclone and now exudes a haunting yet tranquil atmosphere, with remnants of old structures still visible.
Visitors should also explore the Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Memorial, dedicated to India’s Missile Man and former President, showcasing his life achievements. Lastly, Agni Theertham, a sacred beach, is a popular pilgrimage site for its purifying holy dips.
