U.S. President Donald Trump presented Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi with a signed copy of his photobook, Our Journey Together, during their meeting at the White House on Thursday. The two leaders engaged in extensive discussions covering trade, security, and bilateral relations.
The photobook, which captures key moments from Trump's first term, includes images from significant events, such as the Howdy Modi rally during PM Modi's 2019 visit to the U.S. Welcoming Modi to the Oval Office, Trump embraced him warmly before they proceeded with their talks.
During a joint press conference, Trump personally signed the book for Modi, inscribing, "Mr. Prime Minister, you are great."
Flipping through the book, Trump highlighted pictures from the Namaste Trump rally held during his 2020 visit to India, along with an image of himself and First Lady Melania Trump in front of the Taj Mahal.
Expressing his admiration for Modi, Trump told reporters, "It is a great honor to have Prime Minister Modi here. He has been a close friend for many years, and our relationship remained strong throughout my four-year term."
Despite their cordial relations, Trump reiterated concerns over India's high tariffs, emphasizing the need for trade reciprocity. "We are ensuring fairness whatever tariffs India imposes, we will do the same," he stated.
However, both leaders committed to trade negotiations to resolve these issues, expressing optimism about reaching a resolution soon. Trump also revealed plans for "some wonderful trade deals" between the U.S. and India. A senior Trump administration official informed Reuters that a trade agreement could potentially be finalized by the end of the year.
During the press conference, PM Modi praised Trump's leadership, stating, "One quality I truly admire in President Trump is his commitment to prioritizing national interests. Similarly, I always place India's national interest above all else."
According to Reuters sources, India's recent trade concessions were intended as a goodwill gesture to ease tensions with the U.S. A Trump aide indicated that the former president saw defense and energy sales to India as a way to help reduce the U.S. trade deficit.
Both leaders also pledged to enhance security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific, indirectly signaling a shared interest in countering China's influence in the region. Additionally, Trump expressed his administration's willingness to sell advanced F-35 fighter jets to India.
Their discussions further covered joint production ventures in cutting-edge technologies, including artificial intelligence and nuclear energy.
