President Donald Trump has reiterated his stance that the BRICS coalition - comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, and the UAE - was an “attack on the dollar.” He emphasized that the United States would impose tariffs on any nation aligning with BRICS, asserting, “Everybody dropped out. They’re all dropping out of BRICS.”
Trump's administration has previously threatened a 100% tariff on countries pursuing alternatives to the U.S. dollar. In January 2025, he reiterated this threat, stating, “We are going to put tariffs on your nation,” in response to any attempts to replace the dollar.
The BRICS nations have discussed reducing reliance on the U.S. dollar in trade, but remain divided on the issue. India has clarified that de-dollarization is not on the BRICS agenda.
Trump's remarks underscore ongoing tensions between the U.S. and BRICS nations over global economic influence and currency dominance.
