During an interview on NBC’s Meet the Press, Vice President J.D. Vance emphasized that the United States is “not at war with Iran” — rather, it is “at war with [Iran’s] nuclear program.” He clarified that the recent strikes, launched by President Trump on Iran’s Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan nuclear sites, were designed to delay its nuclear capabilities—not to initiate full-scale conflict.
Vance described the operation as a precise and limited response to stalled diplomacy and Iran’s refusal to negotiate in good faith, claiming the strikes had set back Tehran’s nuclear timeline by “many years”. He further framed the action as a potential “reset”—opening doors for renewed talks if Iran chooses the “smart path”.
Though acknowledging widespread public weariness with Middle Eastern engagements, Vance expressed confidence in Trump’s leadership on national security. He stressed that there is no intention to pursue regime change or deploy ground troops, and urged Iran to return to negotiations under the condition that nuclear weapons remain off the table.
As tensions simmer, Vance underscored that while the US strike was firm, it remains committed to avoiding broader war—contingent on Tehran responding responsibly.
