The Congress party has launched a fierce critique of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of a “deafening silence” amid what it calls Israel’s ongoing “genocide” in Gaza, and warning that this silence has diminished India’s moral and political standing on the global stage.
Congress general-secretary (communications) Jairam Ramesh highlighted that while U.S. President Trump brokered a ceasefire between Iran and Israel, Gaza remains embroiled in violence with no truce in sight . He asserted on X (formerly Twitter) that Modi's inaction has undermined India’s legacy of principled foreign policy.
This criticism echoes Congress Parliamentary Party Chair Sonia Gandhi, who wrote days earlier that India’s silence reflects not merely a loss of voice, but a “surrender of values”, and urged the government to re-engage diplomatically to defuse tensions in West Asia.
The party’s demand: PM Modi should publicly condemn the violence in Gaza, reaffirm India’s long-standing support for a two-state solution, and realign with the country's historical moral leadership in the international sphere.
