India’s Quit India Movement (1942)
On August 8, 1942, Mahatma Gandhi launched the Quit India Movement at Mumbai’s Gowalia Tank Maidan with his famous call “Do or Die.” The movement demanded an immediate end to British colonial rule. Within hours, Gandhi and other leaders were arrested, and over 100,000 people were jailed. The movement united Indians across the country in a fierce struggle, becoming a key milestone on India’s path to independence in 1947.
Birth of ASEAN (1967)
On August 8, 1967, five Southeast Asian nations-Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand-signed the ASEAN Declaration in Bangkok. This created the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), aimed at promoting regional cooperation, peace, and economic growth. Today, ASEAN has grown to include ten member countries and plays a crucial role in maintaining stability and development in Southeast Asia.
August 8 stands out as a historic day marking the fight for freedom in India and the birth of regional cooperation in Asia-two powerful moments shaping the future of nations.
