Delhi is not just a city, it is a living museum of India’s past. Believed to be Indraprastha from the Mahabharata, Delhi has witnessed countless empires rise and fall. The Tomars and Chauhans built the early forts, but Prithviraj Chauhan’s defeat by Muhammad Ghori in 1192 marked the beginning of Muslim rule. The Delhi Sultanate shaped the city with landmarks like the Qutb Minar and Siri Fort. Later, the Mughals transformed it further, with Shah Jahan’s Shahjahanabad gifting us the Red Fort and Jama Masjid.
The British captured Delhi in 1803 and made it central to their empire. After the 1857 revolt and the fall of Bahadur Shah Zafar, Delhi saw yet another shift, the creation of New Delhi in 1911, designed by Lutyens and Baker. Post-independence, Delhi became the beating heart of India’s democracy, housing its Parliament, President, and millions of dreams.
Every invasion, rebellion, and rebuilding has left its mark. Delhi is not defined by one empire, but by its resilience. It has been destroyed and rebuilt at least eight times, yet it continues to thrive, forever binding India’s past with its present.
