Imagine waking up to find your face on a fake nude photo-shared from an account pretending to be you.
This horrifying reality is hitting hundreds of Indian girls today. Cybercriminals steal pictures from Instagram, use AI tools to morph them into explicit deepfakes, and then circulate them through fake accounts to target friends, followers, and even family members.
Recent incidents in Delhi, Lucknow, and Gurgaon show how teens and young women were blackmailed, harassed, and mentally traumatised when their morphed photos went viral. Police have made arrests, but the emotional damage lasts. With AI deepfakes rising sharply, experts warn that online impersonation has become one of India’s fastest-growing cybercrimes.
What to do if this happens to you:
-
Report immediately: Open the fake profile → tap three dots → Report → “It’s pretending to be me.” Take screenshots before reporting.
-
File a cyber complaint: Visit cybercrime.gov.in or call 1930. Use IT Act Section 66D for identity misuse.
-
Warn your followers: Post a story saying a fake account is circulating AI-edited pics. Ask everyone to report.
-
Strengthen your safety: Turn on 2FA, keep accounts private, and monitor your name/photo with reverse image search.
Stay alert, act fast, and protect your digital identity.
