Researchers from Madurai Kamaraj University, in partnership with Liverpool John Moores University (UK), have recreated the faces of two individuals based on skulls unearthed at Keeladi, Tamil Nadu, dating back approximately 2,500 years to the Sangam period. Using CT scans and forensic 3D reconstruction technology, led by Professor Caroline Wilkinson, the team meticulously sculpted facial musculature and skin over skeletal remains, referencing modern South Indian anthropometric data to ensure authenticity.
This project blends around 80% scientific precision with 20% artistic interpretation, particularly in reconstructing the lower face where bone data was limited. Inclusion of estimated skin tone, hair, and eye colour based on photographic databases further brings these ancient individuals to life.
Political leaders have hailed the find as validation of Sangam-era Tamil heritage. Chief Minister MK Stalin commented that Keeladi’s scientific findings support descriptions found in Sangam literature. Similarly, Finance Minister Thangam Thenarasu framed the reconstruction as evidence of Tamil civilisation’s deep historical roots.
These reconstructions offer a rare bridge between modern observers and ancient societies, revealing human faces behind archaeological discovery and enriching our understanding of South India’s early urban culture.
