Ab no more ladayi jhagda! Presenting the (legit) UNO rulebook you’ve been waiting for!

A few days ago, me and my colleagues sat down to play UNO, and guess what I played a number card on the +2 card! I know, I know I shouldn’t have but I FORGOT the rule! Does this sound relatable to you, getting rewarded with a penalty just because you forgot a rule?!

Well, I don’t want you to relate to it anymore and here I got you the full-fledged rulebook to play the crazy card game so that no one can make you a fool ;)

First, let’s learn about the game. The deck of UNO consists of 108 cards, made up of Number cards from 0 -9 in four colours (red, green, yellow, blue) and Action cards: Skip, Reverse, Draw Two, Wild, and Wild Draw Four.

Each player is dealt 7 or 11 cards (or whatever number you like), and the remaining cards are placed face down as the draw pile. The top card of the draw pile is flipped over to start the discard pile.

The goal of the game is to get rid of all your cards before your opponents. The first player to do so will be the winner!

Now, let’s come to the game, player to the left of the card dealer starts. The cycle goes clockwise and the players must draw the card matching with the top card on the discard pile by either colour, number.

For Example: the top card is 4 of yellow, you can draw the card which has either the number 4 of the same colour or any other colour.

If a player cannot match the discard pile, they must draw a card from the draw pile. If the card drawn can be played, the player may play it immediately; otherwise, the turn is passed.

The Action cards are the real deal here which can make the game go literally ‘wild’.

Here are the cards:

  1. Skip: The next player loses their turn; they cannot play their card. It can only be played on a card that matches by colour, or on another Skip card.
  2.
  3. Reverse: Reverses the direction of play. It can only be played on a card that matches by colour, or on another Reverse card. If turned up at the beginning of play, the dealer goes first, and the player to the dealer’s right is next.
  4.
  5. Draw Two: The next player must draw two cards and skip their turn. It can only be played on a card that matches by colour, or on another Draw Two. If turned up at the beginning of play, the first player draws two cards and gets skipped.
  6.
  7. Wild: The player has to state which colour it will represent for the next player. It can be played regardless of whether another card is available.
  8.
  9. Wild Draw Four: The player who plays this card chooses the colour and forces the next player to draw four cards and skip their turn. (This card can only be played if the player has no other card that can be played).

Now, imagine you are close to winning the game and have only one card left; You must yell “UNO!” to let others know and if you forget to say "UNO" and another player catches it before the next player begins their turn, the player who didn't say "UNO" must draw two cards as a penalty.

Want to make the game spicy? Here’s what you can do, if a player suspects that a Wild Draw Four card was played illegally (i.e. the player could have played a different card), they can challenge the play. If the player was caught lying, they must draw four cards instead. If the challenger is wrong, they must draw six cards instead!

Need some tips to ace the game?

Keep an eye on the cards your opponents are playing to predict their next moves.

Use your action cards strategically, especially in the last stages of the round.

You're welcome!
