AI Who? Handcraft Ain’t Going Nowhere!

In an age where artificial intelligence is revolutionizing industries, renowned fashion designer Rahul Mishra remains confident that handcrafted artistry will never lose its significance. Speaking at the India Today Conclave 2025, Mishra emphasized that traditional craftsmanship is more than just an art form—it is an essential pillar of India’s cultural and economic landscape.

“The power of handcraft is here to stay,” Mishra stated, highlighting that in a country of 1.5 billion people, artisanal skills serve as both an artistic expression and a livelihood for millions. Alongside industry experts Jean Touboul and Vivek Sahni, he discussed the irreplaceable value of handmade creations in an increasingly digital world.

A prime example of this craftsmanship was Isha Ambani’s stunning Met Gala ensemble, designed by Mishra, which required an astounding 10,000 hours of intricate hand embroidery. Reflecting on its creation, he explained that the theme, "The Garden of Time," inspired the gown’s storytelling. The dress transitioned from wilted flowers at its base to vibrant floral motifs, symbolizing nature’s cycle of rebirth.

Beyond aesthetics, sustainability was at the heart of this masterpiece. Mishra revealed that the gown incorporated elements repurposed from over a decade’s worth of embroidery samples, aligning with both his and Isha Ambani’s commitment to eco-conscious fashion. The extended pallu, resembling a flowing river adorned with floating flowers, further reinforced the idea of time and renewal.

As the fashion industry increasingly leans towards automation and AI-generated designs, Mishra remains a staunch advocate of preserving human craftsmanship. His work serves as a testament to the enduring charm of handmade artistry, proving that despite technological advancements, the soul of fashion lies in the hands of skilled artisans.
