Anantnag Manhunt Widens: Over 175 Detained amid crackdown

In a significant escalation of security measures, authorities in Anantnag district have detained over 175 individuals as part of a comprehensive manhunt aimed at dismantling terror networks operating in the region. This large-scale operation follows a series of targeted attacks, including the recent killing of a non-local vendor in Bijbehara, which have heightened tensions and underscored the persistent threat posed by militant groups.

The detained individuals are currently under investigation for potential links to terrorist activities. Security forces, including the Jammu and Kashmir Police, Army, and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), have intensified cordon and search operations (CASO) across various parts of the district. These operations have led to the recovery of arms and ammunition, including pistols, grenades, and improvised explosive devices (IEDs), from suspected militant associates.

In one notable incident, three individuals were apprehended at a checkpoint in the Wopzan Trijunction area. Identified as Umaiq Mushtaq Zargar, Ishfaq Ahmad Dar, and Shahid Ahmad Gadhanji, the trio was found in possession of a pistol, two magazines, 23 rounds of ammunition, and two grenades. Preliminary investigations suggest they were planning subversive activities under the direction of handlers from the Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba.

The ongoing crackdown is part of a broader strategy to disrupt the operational capabilities of terrorist organizations in the region. Authorities have also taken steps to dismantle the support infrastructure for these groups, including the attachment of properties used to harbor militants. In December 2024, a double-storied residential property valued at approximately ₹5 crores was attached under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in Hugam Lonepora, Srigufwara, for its alleged use in terrorist activities.
