Raja Iqbal Singh of the BJP has been elected as the new Mayor of Delhi, marking the party’s return to power in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) after two years.
Singh won by a landslide, securing 133 out of 142 votes, while his rival, Congress candidate Mandeep, got only eight votes. One vote was invalid.
This strong win came as the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) boycotted the election, accusing the BJP of engineering defections. With the Congress holding just eight seats, BJP had a clear path to victory.
Currently, the MCD has 238 active seats, with 12 vacant. The BJP now holds 117 councillors, up from 104 in 2022, while AAP’s numbers dropped to 113.
The electoral college also included MPs and MLAs, boosting BJP's strength.
After his win, Raja Iqbal Singh thanked PM Modi and senior BJP leaders. He promised: "I will work for the development of Delhi without any discrimination."
With a strong mandate and support, Singh aims to bring change to Delhi's civic administration, promising unity and progress.
