This is why women are silently quitting gyms across India

India's fitness culture is booming-but for many women, hitting the gym isn't just about reps and routines. It's a constant battle with judgement, discomfort, and the ever-present need for hyper-awareness. From awkward stares to unsolicited “bro” advice, gyms can feel more like hostile territory than safe havens of health.
Powerlifter Saraswathi Anand avoids peak hours to sidestep discomfort, while Hyderabad's Priyanka Peeramsetty says gyms feel outright unwelcoming-with loud music, bulking bros, and few women in sight. PR executive Arshia Shaikh has retreated entirely, choosing to work out behind closed doors rather than deal with the judgment. The biggest stressor? Clothing. Many women avoid shorts or sleeveless tops just to dodge unwanted attention.
Psychologists warn that this persistent vigilance is mentally draining. “Gyms should be stress-relievers, not stress zones,” says therapist Jai Arora. Microaggressions-like constant staring and unnecessary tips-can push women into avoiding fitness spaces altogether.
Gym chains are trying to change the narrative. Anytime Fitness India has upped its game with CCTV, emergency buttons, and more female staff. But the journey toward truly inclusive gym culture is far from over. Until then, many women continue doing a parallel workout-one not of muscles, but of mental resilience.
