India is witnessing a slight resurgence in COVID-19 cases, with 257 active cases reported across states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra. The Union Health Ministry attributes this rise to waning immunity and the emergence of new mutated strains, primarily the JN.1 variant and its sub-lineages like LF.7 and NB.1.8.
Originating from the Omicron BA.2.86 lineage, JN.1 was first detected in August 2023 and has since triggered spikes in Southeast Asia, including Singapore, Thailand, and Hong Kong. Experts warn that India could follow a similar trajectory due to declining antibody levels.
Despite the rise, officials assure that the situation remains under control. However, caution is advised as celebrities like Shilpa Shirodkar and cricketer Travis Head reportedly test positive. While the current variant isn't proven deadlier, health authorities urge citizens to remain vigilant to prevent a repeat of earlier pandemic waves.
