In a miraculous late-night rescue, a family of four was pulled out alive from the debris of a collapsed multi-storey building in Delhi's Burari area, more than 24 hours after the disaster. The collapse, which occurred on Monday evening, has already claimed five lives, including two minors.
The rescued family— a couple and their two young sons— was trapped in a small pocket of space created when a ceiling slab fell onto a cooking gas cylinder, preventing the debris from crushing them. Rescuers worked tirelessly through the night to free them, and they were immediately hospitalized.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Police, and Delhi Fire Services are continuing the large-scale rescue operation, which is expected to extend until late Wednesday night. So far, 21 people have been extracted from the rubble—16 alive and 5 dead.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the collapse, with initial reports suggesting structural weaknesses in the newly constructed building. The tragedy has raised concerns over safety regulations and unauthorized constructions in the city.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Raja Banthia confirmed that emergency teams are working round the clock to locate any remaining survivors. The incident has left the neighborhood in shock, with locals questioning how such an incident could occur in a densely populated area.
As rescue efforts continue, officials urge caution and vigilance in construction practices to prevent such devastating tragedies in the future.
