India’s booming fashion industry, projected to reach USD 146.3 billion by 2032, faces mounting scrutiny over the environmental impact of fast fashion. This rapid production model—marked by cheap, disposable clothing—has made the sector the second-largest consumer of water and responsible for approximately 10% of global carbon emissions, eclipsing those from international air travel and shipping combined. In India, rivers near textile hubs often suffer from toxic chemical dyes, and landfills are clogged with discarded garments, worsened by fast fashion’s "buy-and-discard" mindset.
However, a shift is underway as consumers grow more eco-conscious across both urban and smaller cities. Sustainable fashion brands in India are responding by adopting organic materials such as cotton and bamboo, reviving traditional techniques like block printing, and minimizing waste through ethical supply chains. These efforts are not only environmental but also social, ensuring fair wages for artisans and supporting local craftsmanship.
Contrary to the misconception that sustainable fashion is inherently costly, brands are leveraging local resources and direct-to-consumer models to improve affordability. Modular designs that create multiple looks from one item further enhance value. As demand rises in tier-II and tier-III cities, accessible eco-friendly apparel is helping democratised green fashion become a nationwide movement—one that blends style, sustainability, and affordability.
