Cartoonist Hemant Malviya has moved the Supreme Court seeking anticipatory bail after facing an FIR for alleged objectionable social media content targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
According to the complaint, Malviya’s posts allegedly hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus and disturbed communal harmony. The material in question was said to have been uploaded on his social media platforms, triggering outrage and legal action in Madhya Pradesh.
In his petition, Malviya claimed that the charges are politically motivated and violate his freedom of expression under Article 19 of the Constitution. He further argued that the content was satirical in nature and that no intent to incite communal discord or defame religious groups existed.
The case highlights the ongoing debate over the limits of satire, digital expression, and dissent in India, particularly when it involves commentary on political or ideological figures. The Supreme Court is expected to hear the plea in the coming days.
