A woman traveling by train in India claims she was drugged and robbed after consuming food or drink offered by a stranger. She alleges that shortly afterward, she lost consciousness and woke up to find her belongings missing - totaling around ₹8 lakh, primarily gold and cash .
This disturbing method - drugging victims with sedatives hidden in snacks or beverages - has surfaced in news before. In one 2021 incident on the Nizamuddin -Thiruvananthapuram Express, attackers targeted women, causing them to lose consciousness after consuming spiked food; they later helped themselves to gold and cash.
Railways authorities have responded by stating they are taking the woman's claim seriously and will review CCTV footage, speak with coach staff, and coordinate with the Railway Protection Force (RPF) to prevent similar incidents in the future .
Experts and police also urge passengers to avoid accepting food or drinks from strangers, use sealed and trusted sources, and report any suspicious behaviour immediately - calling helpline 139 or flagging down onboard staff. While such crimes remain relatively rare, the impact is severe and serves as a chilling reminder to stay vigilant during train travel.
