The government is preparing to introduce an impeachment motion in the upcoming Monsoon session of Parliament against Justice Yashwant Varma, a former Delhi High Court judge, after a Supreme Court in-house inquiry panel indicted him.
The panel, headed by top judges including Justice Sheel Nagu, found substance in allegations that wads of cash were discovered at Justice Varma’s official residence during a fire incident on March 14. Despite being transferred to the Allahabad High Court, Varma has not been assigned any judicial duties and refused to resign.
The report by former CJI Sanjiv Khanna has been sent to President Droupadi Murmu, who forwarded it to Parliament leaders. The motion requires backing from at least 100 Lok Sabha and 50 Rajya Sabha members and must secure a two-thirds majority in both Houses to proceed.
This marks a rare and serious step towards judicial accountability in India.
