Chennai sets example in Urban Waste Management with massive recycling project!

Chennai has achieved a significant environmental milestone by clearing 1.7 million cubic metres of waste from the Perungudi dumpyard, an area equivalent to 20 football fields. This monumental cleanup was spearheaded by Blue Planet Environmental Solutions, which employed an innovative biomining process to safely and sustainably reclaim the land. The process involved excavating 9,000 tonnes of waste daily, subjecting each batch to 52 rigorous safety checks, ensuring zero pollution throughout the operation.

The reclaimed materials were repurposed into a variety of products: steel was transformed into utensils and hardware; over 3,000 tonnes of glass were recycled into bottles; stones were converted into concrete slabs; and plastics were molded into outdoor furniture, ramps, and pallets. Notably, these plastic-based products can be recycled seven to eight times, significantly extending their lifecycle compared to traditional disposal methods.

Building on the success at Perungudi, Blue Planet is now undertaking a similar project at the Kodungaiyur landfill, aiming to address one of India's largest-ever landfill reclamation challenges .
