China on Monday issued a formal protest to India over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday greetings to the Dalai Lama, who turned 90 this week. The protest also cited the participation of Indian officials at the birthday celebrations, warning that such actions undermine China’s position on Tibet-related issues.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning, addressing a media briefing in Beijing, reiterated that China’s stance on Tibet is consistent and clear, urging India to “fully appreciate Beijing’s sensitivities.” The statement stressed that India should avoid “interfering in China’s internal affairs” and “send the right signals” when it comes to Tibet.
India, meanwhile, has maintained that wishing the Dalai Lama is a routine diplomatic courtesy, and views the spiritual leader as a revered figure. However, the latest exchange underscores the delicate tensions in Sino-Indian relations, particularly concerning border disputes and Tibetan autonomy.
This diplomatic episode comes amid broader geopolitical strain between the two countries, especially after recent border stand-offs in Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh
