Have you ever come across a bird struggling on the ground? Or a sparrow with a broken wing or a pigeon tangled in kite strings? and felt helpless, wishing there was somewhere you could take them? In the heart of Delhi's Chandni Chowk, such a place exists: the Charitable Bird Hospital, a sanctuary dedicated to healing injured birds and giving them a second chance at life.
Founded in 1956 within the peaceful premises of the Digambara Jain Temple, this hospital operates on the Jain philosophy of ahimsa (non-violence). This hospital acts as a lifeline for birds suffering from injuries caused by urban hazards like glass collisions, pollution, and the infamous kite strings.
Here, pigeons, sparrows, parrots, and even peacocks find care in facilities that include an ICU, operation theaters, and aviaries. The staff, a mix of compassionate volunteers and skilled veterinarians, work to nurse their feathered patients back to health.
Most birds are released back into the wild once they recover, while those too injured to survive independently find a permanent home in the hospital's aviaries.
This incredible work receives no government support, relying entirely on donations to continue. You can be a part of this beautiful mission, donate today!
