Former US president and Nobel laureate Jimmy Carter dies at 100

Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, passed away at 100 in Plains, Georgia. A former peanut farmer from Georgia, Carter’s presidency from 1977 to 1981 was marked by the Camp David Accords, which brokered peace between Israel and Egypt, but also by economic struggles, the Iran hostage crisis, and an energy crisis. Though his administration faced challenges, including double-digit inflation and high gas prices, Carter's focus on human rights and diplomacy left a lasting legacy.

After leaving office, Carter became a respected humanitarian, earning the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his global efforts to promote democracy, resolve conflicts, and combat poverty. His Carter Center monitored elections worldwide and championed health initiatives. Despite his accomplishments, he was often regarded as a better former president than a sitting one.

Carter’s personal life reflected his commitment to morality and service. A devout Southern Baptist and Sunday school teacher, he brought his faith into his presidency. Married to Rosalynn Carter for over 75 years, the couple shared a dedication to public service. Rosalynn passed away in November 2023.

World leaders have praised Carter for his humility, compassion, and enduring commitment to peace. Tributes highlight his role in the Egypt-Israel peace treaty, which ended a state of war between the two nations. Public observances are planned in Atlanta and Washington, followed by a private burial in Plains. President Joe Biden declared January 9 a national day of mourning to honor Carter's legacy.
