A joint operation by the Indian Army and Jammu & Kashmir Police in the Basantgarh (Kuru area) of Udhampur district on June 26, 2025, escalated into a fierce armed encounter with terrorists. The operation targeted suspected militants based on credible intelligence ahead of the upcoming Amarnath Yatra.
Security forces initiated a cordon-and-search mission, upon which the terrorists opened fire, prompting an immediate and forceful response. Reinforcements, including additional troops and drone support, were swiftly deployed, and the area remains heavily cordoned off. No official casualty figures have been released yet.
Local authorities have urged residents to stay indoors and avoid the affected zone. This incident highlights a recent spike in militant activity in the region, raising concerns over cross-border infiltration aimed at disrupting the pilgrimage season. The operation is ongoing, with forces determined to neutralize the threat. A detailed briefing from the Army and J&K Police is anticipated once the encounter concludes.
