World Book and Copyright Day is observed every year on April 23 to celebrate books, promote reading, and emphasize the power of literature in bridging cultures and preserving knowledge. Established by UNESCO in 1995, this global observance coincides with the death anniversaries of literary icons such as William Shakespeare, Miguel de Cervantes, and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, making the date a symbolic tribute to storytelling across generations.
The 2025 theme, “The role of literature in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” focuses on how books can raise awareness and inspire change around critical global challenges like poverty, education, inequality, and climate action. Celebrated in over 100 countries, this day is marked by the collective efforts of publishers, libraries, and booksellers who organize literary events and promote reading initiatives. Each year, one city is also named the World Book Capital to lead book-related programs.
Individuals can participate by reading a new book, gifting stories, or engaging in community book clubs. Supporting local authors and independent bookstores is another meaningful way to contribute. Donating books, attending author sessions, or sharing reading experiences online are simple ways to promote the joy of books. The day also raises awareness about copyright laws and the importance of protecting intellectual property. Learning about these rights ensures that creators are respected and that literature continues to thrive within ethical and legal frameworks.
