After Nepal’s government banned 26 social media platforms, widespread protests led by Gen-Z activists erupted over censorship, corruption, and political stagnation. In response, young citizens turned to Discord, a chat-platform, to continue organizing and make decisions. Over 100,000 people convened on the “Youth Against Corruption” server, meeting in virtual channels, hosting debates, and holding polls.
Discord served as their “mini-election” space, with helped moderators overseeing the discussion and options considered. Names like Sagar Dhakal and Kulman Ghising were floated, but after rounds of voting, the consensus nominee emerged: former Chief Justice Sushila Karki. In formal negotiations, Gen-Z representatives, together with Nepal’s Army Chief and President, pushed for this selection to lead an interim government.
Karki, 73, took oath on September 12 as Nepal’s interim Prime Minister. Parliament has been dissolved, and fresh elections are scheduled for March 5, 2026. This moment underscores how younger Nepalis leveraged digital platforms to reclaim political agency, especially when traditional avenues felt shut off.
