In a dramatic diplomatic breakthrough, a Gaza ceasefire declaration was signed by U.S. President Donald Trump alongside leaders of Egypt, Qatar, and Türkiye, who take on the role of guarantors for the accord. The signing in Sharm el-Sheikh followed the release of the final 20 surviving Israeli hostages by Hamas, after more than two years in captivity.
Under the agreement, Israel reciprocated by freeing approximately 1,968 Palestinian prisoners, largely residents of Gaza. Trump hailed the moment as a “tremendous day for the Middle East,” declaring the war in Gaza effectively over.
While the declaration pledges to uphold peace, rebuild Gaza, and outline rules and monitoring mechanisms, many challenges lie ahead. Key issues like Hamas disarmament, Gaza’s governance, and long-term security frameworks remain unresolved.
This moment marks a hopeful turning point—but durable peace will demand sustained political will, verification, and compromise from all parties involved.
