Search and rescue operations are underway in Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district after cloudbursts, flash floods, and landslips struck the Thunag, Gohar, and Karsog subdivisions last week. Authorities on Monday confirmed that 30 people remain missing, with teams deploying drones and sniffer dogs to scour the devastated terrain.
Around 250 personnel from the NDRF, SDRF, Army, ITBP, Home Guards, district administration, and local volunteers are leading the hunt. The focus is on remote and difficult-to-access areas where debris and floodwaters have caused widespread damage. Relief teams have also distributed 1,538 ration kits and provided over ₹12.44 lakh in immediate aid, with additional assistance sent to Thunag and Janjheli.
Infrastructure losses are extensive: approximately 225 houses, seven shops, 243 cattle sheds, 14 bridges, and over 30 vehicles were destroyed, while 494 individuals have been rescued. Since the monsoon began on June 20, Himachal Pradesh has recorded 78 deaths, with 50 attributed directly to rain-related disasters, including cloudbursts and landslides.
Officials have issued yellow weather warnings across the state until July 10, warning of continued heavy rainfall. The ongoing operation is vital for locating missing residents and restoring critical infrastructure to affected communities.
