Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for corruption involving the Al-Qadir Trust. His wife, Bushra Bibi, received a seven-year sentence. The verdict was delivered by an anti-corruption court set up inside Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail, where Khan has been held since August 2023.
The case accuses Khan and Bibi of misusing 50 billion Pakistani rupees (about £190 million), returned to Pakistan by the UK's National Crime Agency in 2022. Prosecutors allege that Khan allowed this money, originally meant for the national treasury, to benefit a real estate tycoon, Malik Riaz. In return, the couple allegedly received land to establish Al-Qadir University in Jhelum.
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) filed the case in December 2023, charging Khan, his wife, and six others. However, only Khan and Bibi faced trial, as the other accused, including Malik Riaz, were out of the country.
Imran Khan, 72, maintains his innocence and calls the charges a political conspiracy to stop him from returning to power. Once a cricket star, Khan transitioned into politics and was ousted from office in April 2022 through a no-confidence vote. He had previously faced convictions for corruption, revealing state secrets, and violating marriage laws, leading to overlapping sentences.
This high-profile case has dominated Pakistan's political landscape, symbolizing one of the largest corruption allegations in the country's history.
