The Global Peace Index (GPI) 2025 has revealed that Iceland remains the most peaceful country in the world for the 17th consecutive year, followed by Ireland, New Zealand, Austria, and Switzerland. These rankings are based on 23 indicators including societal safety, conflict, and militarisation, as assessed by the Institute for Economics and Peace.
India, though located in the second least peaceful region (South Asia), has shown a gradual improvement - ranking 115th globally, ahead of Pakistan (144), Bangladesh (123), and Afghanistan (158). India's score improved by 0.58% from the previous year, with positive changes in nine indicators.
Conversely, Russia (163) and Ukraine (162) are now the two least peaceful nations, primarily due to the ongoing war. The global trend shows a decline in peacefulness, with peace inequality growing by 11.7% in two decades.
India’s slow climb in the rankings signals hope amid global instability.
