NCERT’s new modules revisit Partition with fresh lens!

NCERT has introduced dedicated educational modules marking Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, urging students to reflect on 1947’s partition through a candid, layered narrative. Rather than singling out one party, the modules emphasize a shared responsibility: Jinnah for demanding a separate nation, Congress for acquiescing, and Lord Mountbatten for implementing the hasty division.

This marks a distinct shift toward unpacking the multifaceted causes of Partition moving away from simplified portrayals to acknowledging political decisions, urgency, and historic missteps. Jinnah's unexpected position on the speed of separation is noted, while Congress’s role in consenting to the path set by colonial and League pressures comes under scrutiny. Mountbatten’s expedited demarcation process is framed as a critical catalyst.

To deepen public comprehension, the government has also declared the observance of ‘Vibhishika Smriti Diwas’ (Partition Horrors Remembrance Day), aiming to instill an understanding of the human cost forced migrations, communal violence, and trauma within younger generations.

The response has been polarized: Congress condemned the modules as unfair and called for them to be withdrawn, while BJP leaders defended the updated historical framing.
