A 25-year-old man, identified as Kumar Dhirender Pratap Singh, tragically died after being trapped in an elevator during a fire that broke out at Vishal Mega Mart in Karol Bagh, central Delhi, on Friday evening (July 4). The blaze reportedly started around 6:44 pm on one of the upper floors of the four-storey building, triggering panic among shoppers and staff. While many managed to evacuate safely, Singh became stuck in the lift, which may have malfunctioned due to the fire or a power failure.
Firefighters rushed to the scene with 13 fire tenders and brought the flames under control. Singh was eventually found inside the lift and rushed to RML Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. Authorities suspect a short circuit may have caused the fire and have launched an investigation into possible safety violations. The incident raises serious concerns about fire safety protocols in commercial buildings, especially the need for regular safety audits and public awareness about avoiding elevator use during fires.
