In Ghaziabad’s Vasundhara area on July 18, activists from Hindu Raksha Dal (HRD) stormed two popular outlets - KFC and Nazeer Foods - to demand a ban on the sale of non-vegetarian food during the holy month of Sawan, especially near Kanwar Yatra routes . Chanting slogans like “Jai Shree Ram” and “Har Har Mahadev”, the protesters forcibly shut the shutter of the KFC outlet and staged a demonstration against both establishments.
The group demanded all meat-selling establishments within 100–200 meters of Kanwar routes be closed during Sawan, citing offense to devotees’ religious sentiments due to non-veg food smell and presence . Videos shared on social media showed HRD members carrying saffron flags and entering the restaurants despite objections from staff, with police present but largely passive.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement or undertake administrative action. HRD threatened further agitation if their demands were ignored. At least one outlet closed its shutters temporarily following the protest, raising questions about enforcement of secular commercial operations in public spaces during religious periods .
