The Indian National Congress has criticized the nomination of former U.S. President Donald Trump for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, calling it another example of the “bizarre” and “ironic” choices made by the Nobel Committee over the years. The nomination, reportedly put forward by Pakistan and Israel, has sparked debate across political circles in India.
In a strongly worded statement, Congress questioned how someone like Trump - known more for controversial policies than peacebuilding - could be considered for such an honour, while peace icons like Mahatma Gandhi were never awarded. Gandhi, who led a global non-violent freedom movement, was nominated five times but never received the prize - a fact often cited as one of the committee’s most glaring oversights. Jawaharlal Nehru was also once nominated but not selected.
Congress’s reaction has reignited debate over the credibility and politics of the Nobel Peace Prize. Many are questioning whether global diplomacy or global popularity is now the true metric for selection.
