India will conduct large-scale civil defence mock drills on May 29 across four states bordering Pakistan—Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Jammu & Kashmir—in a move aimed at bolstering national preparedness amid escalating security concerns.
These drills are part of “Operation Abhyaas,” a Ministry of Home Affairs initiative to enhance civilian readiness for potential wartime scenarios. The exercises will simulate emergency conditions such as air raids, blackouts, and mass evacuations, testing both civilian response and coordination among local authorities and defence personnel.
The timing of the drills is significant, following India's recent Operation Sindoor—an assertive strike on terror infrastructure in Pakistan-occupied territories—and its call for Pakistan’s re-entry into the FATF grey list over alleged terror financing.
Officials have emphasized that these exercises are precautionary and not linked to any immediate threat. However, they are a clear signal of India's intent to maintain a state of high alert along its western front.
Citizens in the targeted areas are urged to remain calm and cooperate with authorities during the drill. The government believes such proactive measures are crucial for minimizing chaos during real emergencies and for strengthening India’s internal security apparatus.
