In a recent interview with the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar firmly denied any U.S. involvement in the recent ceasefire between India and Pakistan. He attributed the cessation of hostilities to decisive Indian military actions, specifically targeting Pakistan's airbases and air defense systems, which compelled Islamabad to seek a halt in hostilities.
Jaishankar emphasized that the ceasefire was the result of direct communication between the military commanders of both nations, without external mediation. He criticized the tendency of some Western narratives to portray South Asian conflicts as potential nuclear flashpoints, calling such perspectives alarmist and unhelpful.
Additionally, Jaishankar expressed concerns over Pakistan's close defense ties with China, suggesting that this strategic partnership warrants closer scrutiny. He encouraged observers to "draw your own conclusions" regarding the implications of this alliance.
The ceasefire followed heightened tensions after a terrorist attack in Indian-administered Kashmir, which India attributed to Pakistan-based groups. India's military response, dubbed Operation Sindoor, involved targeted strikes on militant infrastructure across the border. Jaishankar reiterated India's commitment to counterterrorism and its readiness to act decisively against threats emanating from Pakistan.
