Mental Well-Being: A Key to Staying Active

Recent research from the University of Jyväskylä, Finland, reveals the significant role mental well-being plays in maintaining physical activity levels, particularly during societal challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic. The study analyzed data from individuals aged 60–88, highlighting how positive mental states encouraged consistent or increased physical activity, while depressive feelings were linked to reduced activity levels.

The research encompassed two major studies: the Jyväskylä Longitudinal Study of Personality and Social Development (JYLS) and the Promoting Safe Walking Among Older Adults (PASSWORD). Participants self-reported their levels of positive and negative affectivity, depressive symptoms, and physical activity during the pandemic. Findings showed that individuals around the age of 60, who exhibited higher positive affectivity, maintained or increased their activity levels. However, stricter restrictions for older adults over 70 appeared to weaken this relationship.

The study also found that depressive feelings, more than general negative affectivity, significantly reduced physical activity among older adults. Symptoms such as insomnia and appetite loss were identified as broader risk factors that hinder physical engagement. These findings suggest that fostering mental well-being can help sustain physical activity, creating a positive feedback loop between mental and physical health.

Researchers emphasized the importance of not only addressing depressive symptoms but also actively promoting positive mental states to encourage a healthier, more active lifestyle, even during societal emergencies.
